Basic Red 1

Basic Red 1 is a classic synthetic cationic dye, belonging to the azo chemical class. It is not a pigment but a soluble dye, known for its vibrant, bluish-red shade and its primary use in coloring acrylic fibers.

It is the go-to dye for achieving bright red and magentas on acrylic yarn, fabric, sweaters, and blankets. It can also be used on modacrylic, nylon, and with a mordant (a chemical that fixes the dye) on protein fibers like wool and silk.

In a purified form, it is used as a histological stain in laboratories to color specific tissue components for examination under a microscope.

Used to create brightly colored papers.

Applied in some specialized inks, such as ballpoint pens or stamp pads.

Good to Excellent (on Acrylic). Because the dye forms a strong ionic bond with the fiber, it does not easily washed out of properly dyed acrylic textiles.
